To get or renew a commercial driver's license (CDL), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires a DOT physical from a certified medical examiner. Live Well Medical Care provides these exams for truck, bus, delivery and other commercial drivers — quickly and at an affordable price.
If you pass, you leave the same day with your Medical Examiner's Certificate (DOT card). Results are reported to the FMCSA National Registry and you get a copy to submit to the New York DMV.
What the DOT exam checks
- Vision — at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without glasses or contacts
- Hearing — the forced-whisper test at 5 feet
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Urinalysis for protein, blood and sugar
- Physical exam of the heart, lungs, abdomen, spine and nervous system
- Review of your medical history, medications and past conditions
What to bring
Your driver's license, glasses, contacts or hearing aids if you use them, a list of current medications and your previous DOT card. If you have diabetes, a heart condition or sleep apnea, bringing a recent letter or report from your treating doctor speeds things up.
Have a medical condition?
High blood pressure, diabetes or another chronic condition does not automatically disqualify you. When it is well controlled, a shorter-term certificate is often possible. As a primary care physician and kidney specialist, Dr. Azmir can also treat the condition at the same clinic to get you back on the road.
Same-day certificate
With no complications, the visit usually takes 30–45 minutes and you leave with your Medical Examiner's Certificate that day. A certificate is valid for up to 24 months.
